In May, the Russian market for new cars halved
Only 63,033 new cars and light commercial vehicles were acquired by the Russians in May 2020. This is 51.8% (67,813 units) less than what was sold for the same month last year. During the period from January to May, sales decreased by 25.7% – to 478,135 units. This was announced by the committee of car manufacturers of the Association of European Businesses.
Chairman of the organization Thomas Shtertzel noted that the decline is not surprising, because car dealerships were closed throughout the month. AEB expects that now, when dealers return to their activities, the situation will improve. In addition, it is expected that in the second half of the year the market will begin to recover due to the next package of government support measures.
The leaders of the Russian market of new cars among brands in May were Lada, Kia, Hyundai, Renault and Toyota, with each of them dropping by about half. Only Haval, Changan, Fiat and FAW were able to get a plus, however they sold only 1,149 cars – for four. The most popular models were Lada Granta and Vesta, KIA Rio, Hyundai Creta and Volkswagen Polo.
In conclusion, we add that in April the market decline was even more noticeable – by 72.4% (38 922 units). In this regard, many manufacturers have now reported a “growth” in May sales.
